Abante Barangay marks World Environment Day
Let’s all support World Environment Day.
While the official celebration was on June 5, 2012, Abante Barangay set our local celebration on June 9, 2012 or this Saturday with the planting of 500 trees in Barangay Babag 1.
With this year’s theme “Green Economy”, we once again call on the Government and all Filipinos to strike a balance between development and concern for mother earth.
What is a “Green Economy”? The UN Environment program defines it as ‘one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities’. Simply put, it is an economy that has low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive. What can we do in our own little way- 1. transport – promote carpooling, take public transport, walk or use a bike, 2. water – use water wisely; turn off the tap when not using it, collect rainwater for watering plants and arrange laundry time 3. waste – reduce, reuse and recycle whenever possible. Reduce use of plastics and compost food waste to lessen waste in landfills and create a more resource-efficient economy
Simple changes in lifestyle and purchasing behavior can help make the transition into a green economy and a healthier planet.
