Environment first before Pacquiao-Bradley fight

Former Usec Aristotle ‘Totol’ Batuhan led over a hundred members of the Abante Barangay Movement and other groups in celebrating World Environment Day in Cebu with a tree-planting activity in Barangay Babag 1 on June 9, 2012.

This transpired a day before the Pacquiao-Bradley fight when almost all Filipinos were glued to their television sets on Sunday morning.

Batuhan explained that the tree planting event was in line with the celebration of the World Environment Day on June 5, 2012.

With the theme “Kalikupan panggaon ta! Mananum kita!” the tree planting activity was held at Brgy. Babag-1, Cebu City and participated by members of the Abante Barangay Movement, Red Cross, Kauban, Abante Youth, and Instrumental Independent Clan.

“There are over 100 participants who planted 500 seedlings of different tree varieties,” Joy Lodonia of the Abante Barangay Movement said.

“The seedlings include avocado, cacao, and guyabano. The fruit trees are essential and very useful, and not prone to illegal logging,” Lodonia added.

The Abante Barangay Movement decided on celebrating World Environment Day on Saturday so more can participate instead of a weekday or on Sunday when people are watching the Pacquiao-Bradley fight. Contending political groups in Cebu City engaged in a battle to provide free viewing of the fight.

According to Batuhan, he wanted young Cebuanos to realize the importance of plants and trees in both human and wildlife biodiversity while helping address the so-called ‘Greenhouse Effect.’

When does Greenhouse Effect occur?

This happens when heat is trapped in the earth’s atmosphere due to high levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other heat trapping gases which ultimately prohibit the heat from being released into space.

Trees likewise prevent flash floods, landslides and soil erosion. Trees are part of the habitat of animal kingdom and a source of oxygen for breathing. (by Marie Rose Alviar)
